Advancing your programme knowledge

All of the programmes I use to create my designs or edit my photography, I've taught myself. It fascinates me to find out how something works. I've got over 15 years worth of experience in Photoshop and plenty of experience in the others.

I really enjoy teaching and passing my knowledge on to others, if you'd like tuition, please get in touch!

what's on offer...

Introduction

Photoshop is the industry standard for editing photographs and other bitmap images. Virtually anything can be achieved in Photoshop. In my opinion, the mark of a good Photoshop job is one that doesn’t look to have been Photoshopped. The programme is huge, and there are so many tools and adjustments that it can initially be extremely daunting, my aim is to make it less frightening and turn the photoshop experience into an enjoyable one.

Where possible, I prefer to instruct the student as they operate the programme, I find it’s a much more effective approach than just demonstrating it myself. I’ve always found it’s far easier to remember the hows and whys when using the “hands on” method.

Introductory Level

If you are new to Photoshop and want to be able to quickly add sparkle to your digital photography, I can help build your skills and knowledge by running through basic tips and tricks. It’s amazing how some very simple tricks can magically transform a great picture into a really great picture.

Tailored / Advanced Tuition

If you are no beginner to Photoshop and would like to further your skills and abilities then I can help. This can be structured to include more advanced techniques, or if you have a specific list of tasks which you are struggling with then I can show you how to achieve these.

Introduction

Like with Photoshop, Illustrator is the industry standard programme for creating vector artwork. For the uninitiated, Vector art work is created from points (coordinates) and lines. The benefits of vector artwork is that it can be used at any size (unlike bitmap images which have a finite quality), and that graphics can be easily modified and re-arranged.

As with all my training, I prefer to instruct the student as they operate the programme where possible, it’s a much more effective approach than just demonstrating it myself. I’ve always found it’s far easier to remember the hows and whys this way.

Introductory Level

For beginners in Illustrator I can run through the basic skills and abilities required to get started with vector illustration and general use of Illustrator. From fills, strokes, colours, gradients and drawing curves through to producing print ready artwork.

Tailored / Advanced Tuition

If you are already an Illustrator user and would like to know more of what it can do, then I can show you. Either with examples of more adventurous techniques or by tackling any stumbling blocks that you are struggling with.

Introduction

InDesign is a superb programme designed specifically for creating page layouts. It can combine elements from Photoshop and elements from Illustrator, both bitmap and vector information to create fantastic print ready artwork.

Where possible, I prefer to instruct the student as they operate the programme, I find it’s a much more effective approach than just demonstrating it myself. I’ve always found it’s far easier to remember the hows and whys when using the “hands on” method.

Introductory Level

InDesign is an extremely intuitive programme, however we do all need to start somewhere. Because it is such a simple programme, very simple explanations of what’s what will get you on your way to creating much more creative print ready artwork.

Tailored / Advanced Tuition

For more advanced users, there are still some brilliant features left to find to make your artwork even prettier and easier to create, such as styles for text and objects, and master templates. With a full appreciation of these advanced skills it’s easy to create larger more complicated layouts such as brochures and magazines.

Apple’s Aperture, and Adobe’s Lightroom are very similar programmes, they are both programmes for editing and organisation of photographs. Both are capable of editing RAW format images as well as other image formats such as JPG. RAW editing offers far greater possibilities as the files contain a greater amount of information than the JPG format. I use Aperture myself, but the two programmes are so similar it would be easy to tutor in Lightroom if required.

If you are looking to advance your photography, and start taking and editing photographs in RAW then a course in either Lightroom or Aperture would be perfect.
